The Project

Background

Phase 1 of the Eco-Hostel project has already been completed with the connection of utilities and removal of hazardous material from one building. However, that building does not fit within Seaside’s specific plan criteria for University Village in Campus Town, so it will need to be replaced with a new building.

To that end, a design charrette has taken place to define what the Fort Ord Hostel Society’s leased portion of the future University Village will look like with the Eco-Hostel as the cornerstone project and other buildings providing innovative resources for the community.

The graphic on this page shows the overall regional view of Seaside’s University Village in their new city called Campus Town located in Seaside’s portion of the former Fort Ord. The building labeled Eco-Hostel and “TBD” (to be designed) are hypothetical and and draft versions are being considered.

Also, plans for the Eco-Hostel will include new design features to ensure guest safety in a Covid-19 type pandemic and to meet the city of Seaside’s Campus Town requirements.

The Eco-Hostel project has the support of American Youth Hostels (dba HI-USA, Hostelling International USA), California State Parks, California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) – Sustainable Hospitality Program, the Santa Cruz Hostel Society, the City of Seaside, and local residents and organizations.
